A good food charity has received a £1.25m boost to establish a special nutrition programme for the elderly.
The Soil Association’s Food for Life Programme received the funding to help launch an innovative scheme that uses good food to boost wellbeing and reduce isolation among older people.
Official figures from charitable association Bapen reveal that 1.3 million people over the age of 65 suffer from malnutrition, while Age UK found that two fifths of elderly consider the television to be their main source of company.
This project works directly with programme users to tackle these issues across three key areas in the UK: Edinburgh, Calderdale and Kirklees, and Leicester City and Leicestershire.
In 2015 NHS England was asked by Department of Health to review the Council of Europe ’10 key characteristics of good nutrition and hydration care’. These have been reviewed and changes been made following feedback from stakeholders that included patient and public representative organisations; NHS providers; commissioners; national NHS organisations; catering providers and independent pharmaceutical food supplements providers and professional organisations (BAPEN, BDA). The implementation of the ’10 key characteristics of good nutrition and hydration care’ is a requirement to meet the Hospital Food Standards SC19 in the NHS Contract for hospitals.
The updated 10 key characteristics are:
A healthy, well-balanced diet is essential for people of all ages, but it is especially important for elderly people to get their recommended nutritional amounts. Unfortunately, people in their senior years are less likely than other age groups to maintain a healthy diet due to several differing lifestyle factors.
Physical reasons such as dental problems or a decline in the senses can impact on an elderly person’s dietary habits, as can the difficulty they may have being on their feet for a long time while trying to co-ordinate cooking meals. In addition, they could be beset by a lack of appetite from feelings of loneliness, a lack of income to buy the food they need or the logistical barriers of being unable to get to a supermarket, particularly in adverse weather.
Daniel Head, Business Development Manager at the Real Soup Company, has been voted in as the new Welsh Regional Chair for the National Association of Care Catering (NACC), with immediate effect.
The move is the culmination of a longstanding partnership between The Real Soup Company and the NACC. The producer of fresh soups, based in Ebbw Vale, Gwent, supplies many local authorities both within Wales and beyond, with Daniel as its main point of contact in the care sector.
